We're here to support customers with their housing needs, so we’ve put together some information about rehousing options available for you and your family. If you've been contemplating moving but aren't sure what your choices are, we can help.
How do we help?
Please remember that the demand for social housing is far greater than the number of homes we have available. We work with a large number of councils to help provide homes for people who are homeless, and to rehouse families in high housing need – for example those who are overcrowded - from local authority housing registers. If you wish to move, you should consider approaching your local council or looking into the other options below.
What options are there?
Social and affordable housing through a local authority
Contact your local authority and register using their housing application form. They will assess your needs, looking at things like whether you’re overcrowded where you live now, and taking any medical or social requirements you have into account.
Mutual exchange
Swap your home with another social tenant – find out more about mutual exchange and how you can search for available properties on HomeSwapper.
SNG Home Transfer
We run a very small waiting list for existing tenants with a high priority need to move to another SNG home. We only advertise a small percentage of our homes this way and not in all areas (currently no homes in London and East).
If you consider you meet the criteria in our banding criteria , you should contact your Locality Officer. They will discuss your circumstances with you and ask you to provide any supporting information and/or details of support agencies you may be working with. The Officer will complete an assessment which will be discussed at Panel before a decision is reached. If it’s agreed that you meet the criteria, we will set you up to register on SNG Home Transfer (via a link sent to your email address) and you'll be given a priority banding. From here you can bid on properties when they're advertised. In most cases, those in the highest priority banding will be the successful bidder, so please do consider the other ways above that you could try to move home.
Please note, SNG Home Transfer is powered by Locata Housing Services. Locata is our data processor and will follow full instructions from SNG, as we are the data controller.
Other rental options with SNG
Visit our Looking to rent page for more information on our Intermediate Rent, London Living Rent and SmartRent options, as well as key worker accommodation in the South and West and some homes for private rent.
We also advertise a small number of homes through Zoopla.
Other rental schemes
HomeFinderUK enables you to find social housing outside your local area if you're a homeless household or other social housing applicant.
The Mayor's Housing Moves scheme enables victims/survivors of domestic abuse and former rough sleepers to move to a home within London. Housing associations contribute homes to the scheme throughout the year and these are advertised on the Housing Moves website so applicants can ‘bid’ for properties they're interested in. if you are in one of these two groups, you will need to be referred to the scheme.
The Seaside and Country Homes scheme offers people who are aged 55 and over, and live in social housing in London, the opportunity to move to bungalows and flats, managed by housing associations located mainly across the south coast but also in eastern England and the west country. It helps around 150 households to move from London each year.
Renting from the private sector
There are many more privately rented homes than council or housing association homes, so becoming a tenant of a private landlord and settling into a new home happens much more quickly.
Private rent can be more expensive and with a less secure tenancy. If you already have a social housing tenancy, don't give this up without thinking carefully about your options, as you’re not guaranteed to get another tenancy in the future. If you are thinking of this option, please seek legal advice from Citizens Advice .
Shared ownership
SNG offers a wide range of shared ownership schemes (a cross between buying and renting) in many areas. Find out more on our Looking to buy page. Shared ownership is also available via other providers.
